David Swan

Journalist
The Age and Sydney Morning Herald

David has been writing about Australia's startup industry for longer than most in the business. He is one of the nation's leading technology reporters and editors and has built trusted relationships with many across this sector which is why it’s often his name printed alongside the biggest breaking stories.

David has incredible tales about Silicon Valley, publicly listed companies and the startup world and knows many of the untold histories of the people, places and businesses involved in this sector over the past few decades.

He appears on TV and radio as a tech expert and was recently awarded Australia’s best business technology journalist at the 2022 ACS IT Journalism awards and was highly commended in 2018 at the Quill awards for best business feature writing – he clearly knows what he’s talking about!

David is keen in particular to moderate panels and host fireside chats - his probing yet warm interview technique is always a winner with audiences.

Most recently, David exposed what really happened on ‘Optus’ day from hell’ when Australia’s worst telecommunications outage in recent memory took almost 16 hours to recover from and affected more than ten million customers.

It’s a story with many twists and turns, an allegorical tale we can all learn from.
